27A- Reading Reflection No.3

I decided to read “The Wright Brothers” by David McCullough in the Biography/Autobiography section of the reading list.

1)   I think what surprised me the most is that nobody knew them and when they heard about the airplane, no one believed them. I admired the most was their dedication to creating the first flying airplane even after many fails. They failed for years trying to create the first airplane.
2)   Both brothers did not give up on trying to create the airplane. They spent years trying to get it right.
3)   Nothing about the book was very confusing to me. I think what was confusing is how they knew what they needed to build a plane when there was no plane that was ever built yet.
4)   I would first ask them if they knew they would eventually create a flying airplane or if they thought it was more of a pipe dream. Then, I would ask them why they never gave up. I think knowing the reason why someone never gave up is as important as why/ how they failed in the first place.

5)   I think their opinion of hard work was not giving up even if you keep failing. I share that opinion now. I used to give up after failing once, but I have realized that failing is needed to succeed.

  1. This book seemed like a great choice! I have always been interested in the Wright Brothers and found it really interesting that they were not known and that many people did not believe them when they spoke of the airplane. It takes a lot of dedication to do what they did. To constantly fail and still be able to move forward and accomplish your ultimate goal has to be such a empowering feeling. It sounds like you took quite a bit away from this book and I hope it helps you in the future!

  2. Hey Melanie,
I did this book for my last reading reflection and solely because I loved it. It taught me about the concept of failure and perseverance in entrepreneurship. Without this burning desire the wright brothers would be nothing, or have nothing. But because of them we have the ability to travel through air in huge mechanisms that can take many people. Obviously if they did not do it someone else would've, but because of their dedication and burning desire to be the first ones their names and product will forever go down in history.

  3. Awesome post! My dad was a pilot and I want to get my license too. So I grew up learning about the Wright Brothers and their trials and tribulations. I can't imagine failing over and over again then finally being able to achieve success after a period of years. It goes to show that when you know you're on the brink of something greatness you have to see it through and not give up.
