12A- Figuring out Buyer Behavior No.1

Pick a segment:
In this assignment, the segment I choose to focus on is men and women in the workforce.

Three people I interviewed:
            1. A 50-year-old woman who works indoors.
            2. A 21-year-old woman who works outdoors.
            3. A 52-year-old man who works indoors and outdoors.

Need Awareness:
These three people that I have interviewed all have the same unmet need. They all tend to struggle with their icepacks going warm while they are still at work and have food/beverages in their lunchboxes. The 52-year-old man that I interviewed actually got tired of his icepacks getting warm that he bought a mini fridge for his office. He said that it helped, but he still can’t fix the lunchbox problem when he leaves his office for job duties outside of his office. The 21-year-old woman has the problem the worst during the summertime, because she works completely outside, and the heat melts her icepacks way quicker. The 50-year-old woman says her icepacks stay cold for a couple hours, but then starts losing its coolness. She works 10 hour shifts and they do not stay cold that long. She said it is a problem because towards the end of her shift is when she gets the hungriest.

Information Search:
When the 51-year-old man became aware of this problem, he stopped bringing his lunch outside of his office because his food would get warm. He ended up just throwing his food out. He started going out to eat at fast food places or to portable food trucks nearby to solve this problem of his. The 21-year-old woman and the 50-year-old woman solved their problem by not bringing food that needed to be cold and just would drink not as cold beverages in their lunches.

Report the findings of your research:
My findings have shown that there is a much need for keeping people’s food/beverages cold when they are at work.

Conclusion:
In this particular segment, people in the workforce are needing something that keeps their food/beverages cold all day. They are creating a hassle for themselves trying to find an alternative to their problem. They are having to take extra steps during the day to make sure they have fresh food.

  1. Hey Melanie, your interviews seemed to really help get a understanding on the behavior of the buyers. I know you mentioned that one lady works outside the entire time and her icepack would melt really quickly. Had she ever tried any alternatives to a ice pack such as a small cooler. I know today there are so many options that keep drinks, food, etc. cold for such long periods of time. I think it would be tough for a lot of people who work indoors to jump on this opportunity just because every place I have ever worked at indoors offered a full size fridge for employees to store their food. I thought it was a bit odd that the man had to buy a mini fridge in order to put his food in there. I just think that you would want to stick with the outdoor customers much more then people who work indoors. Overall I enjoyed seeing these different people's behavior and how they had to make adjustments in order to keep their food cool.

  2. Hey Melanie, it seems as if you have conducted a lot of good research for your product to keep food and drinks cool while at work. I am going to take a dissenting view of this product and make suggestions that others may use against your product. In terms of drinks, cooler technology is great today with Yetis and other products that can keep drinks at whatever temperature you wish. There are also refrigerators that can work to keep drinks cold and can keep your food cold.

  3. Melanie,
This has been a big topic or years now with the whole yeti cooler topic. What can keep something cold the longest. Each of your interviewees has a problem they'd like to be solved and I'm just wondering what you are suggesting to make this vision a reality. There is a problem now what can the research be to help solve it?
